Chapter 16: King Theodore
She does not wait for Leo to show her the rest of the way home. She doesn't need to. The moment her feet touches familiar ground, she is a lioness again, back with her pride. She shifts and runs to the castle, moving past stunned guards who recognize her smaller frame and the distinct scent of Sir Leo's cloak flapping around her neck.
Her paws slow when she finds what she is looking for, and she pauses right outside, peeking through the opening to spy at her brother. She
Her brother looks regal on his throne, exuding raw power and thinly-veiled anger. She has seen him upset before, but she's never seen him like in element as he is now, half feral in his anger. The men in his court are on their knees, head bowed, too fearful to meet his gaze. There is a sharp drop in temperature in the room, as though his mere anger is enough to freeze the air around him.
All that melts away the moment he sees her at the door. She shifts back to her human form and adjusts the cloak around herself, making sure she is decent before stepping into the light.
He leaps from the stairs, jumping gracefully to her the way a lion would pounce on a prey, except she's not prey. She doesn't know if it's a trick of light or if he actually shifts mid leap to lion, and then back to human again right before his arms wrap around her torso and lifts her to his chest.
"Kitten," he breathes, holding her so tightly that she fears her ribs would crack. She really doesn't mind. She is holding him just as tightly, fingers digging into his back, purring in contentment. He exhales as though he had been holding his breath in his chest for her weeks of absence. "I thought I've lost you," he says.
"I'm here," she whispers, her words muffled against his chest. She is wetting his linen with her tears, but she has a feeling he doesn't mind. He is breathing hard, his heart thumping against his chest rapidly. "I'm sorry for worrying you."
He rubs his cheek to hers, the scent glands there leaving his smell on her to keep others away. It's something mothers would do for their cubs. When he's satisfied with the way she smells, he lets her go, but keeps her at arm's length so he can look her over carefully.
"I'm fine," she says before he can question her. Fear clenched around her heart all of a sudden. She is afraid that he would be able to see the imprint of the collar around her neck. His gaze lingers there for a moment, but he looks up again, none-the-wiser.
"I should never have sent you away," he snarls. She notices that their Seer is "You've grown thinner," he comments.
"That's impossible," she laughs.
"What an adventure you must have had, kitten," he teases.
"There is so much to tell you," she sighs, her heart heavy with the thought of being so far apart from her mate.
